Newly sealed court documents reveal that US singer D4vd - real name David Anthony Burke - is identified as a target in the alleged murder of a 14-year-old girl whose remains were found in his car in September.

The documents were released after D4vd's family was called by a California court to testify before a grand jury.

David Burke, D4vd's father, fought against the call in Texas court, thereby incorporating parts of the California case that had not been previously available to the public.

The documents confirm that D4vd has been identified as a "target" of a grand jury investigation in Los Angeles and could be the subject of a murder charge.

He has not been charged or officially named a suspect in the case, and no indictment has been issued. The grand jury process is ongoing, according to US media reports.

D4vd has not commented on the case, but his representatives have previously stated that he has cooperated with police.

The singer's lawyer did not immediately respond to a BBC request for comment.

Unsealed court documents represent the latest chapter in a case that has been analyzed by internet sleuths for months.

On September 8, 2025, investigators discovered the decomposed head and torso of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez in a Cvadvar bag registered to D4vd's address in Texas, according to court documents.

When the bag was removed, they found dismembered hands and feet in a black bag, the documents state.

D4vd - who released his debut album in April - was on tour when the remains were discovered.

Police previously said they discovered Rivas Hernandez's remains in a Tesla parked after being alerted to a foul odor at a Hollywood parking lot.

Rivas Hernandez, from the California city of Lake Elsinore, was missing and last seen in April, according to a missing person flier cited by CBS, the BBC's US news partner.

The decomposition of her body showed she had been dead for "several weeks," investigators said.

A police spokesman previously said the case was being investigated by its robbery-homicide unit.

When the grand jury process began last year, court documents said prosecutors believed testimony from D4vd's family was "material and necessary" for the investigation.

But David Burke, along with wife Colleen and son Caleb, argued that the subpoena violated their right to due process because the notification they received from the California court contained redacted information, according to Texas court transcripts included in the documents.

"The court ordered Mr. Burke to travel across the country to appear before the California grand jury, never giving him the full documents that justified the extraordinary compulsion," a statement from David Burke's lawyer said.

He challenged the interstate subpoena from the California court, which he said forced him to travel against his will.

Los Angeles Police Department detectives traveled to Texas to escort the singer's family to California to testify before the grand jury, whose proceedings are secret, according to court records.

Related documents have so far provided the largest amount of information about the case, revealing key details of the investigation, which has been shrouded in secrecy.

In November, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office said it had received a court order imposing a security hold on the case and that no details about Rivas Hernandez's death could be published or posted on its website.

The police department said it requested the order to ensure officers "receive information from the medical examiner without it being released to the public."

Dr. Ody Ukpo, the county's chief medical examiner, said the practice of security holds "is almost unheard of in other counties" and "is not proven to improve outcomes in the legal system."

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office declined to comment when contacted by the BBC.
