The wait for the first Champions League title since 2020 continues for Bayern Munich after reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain knocked them out in the quarterfinal stage. A 1-0 win in Munich on Wednesday completed a 6-4 aggregate victory, while a 1-1 draw in the rematch ended a 6-5 aggregate victory. After a 5-4 first-leg defeat in Paris had already earned the contest the title of one of the greatest games in the competition, Bayern soon found themselves two down. Ousmane Dembele scored early, with the former Borussia Dortmund striker netting after a clever pass from Khvicha Kvaratskheli. Champions PSG showed in Paris that they are not the team that always stands firm on their position strength, and both sides continued at a fast pace. PSG left-back Nuno Mendes was lucky not to receive a second yellow card for handball, which angered German fans at Allianz Arena and typically unflappable coach Vincent Kompany was incensed by another handball call, with the ball hitting Vitinha's arm but no action taken by the referee or video assistant referee (VAR). Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had to reassure his fans from throwing missiles onto the pitch. A warning was issued. Bayern's Jamal Musiala came close three times before halftime, but the German champions had plenty to do at the break. But as the minutes of the second half passed, Bayern's frustration became more apparent with each failed attack. While they worked some promising positions, Bayern lacked the confidence they showed last week and throughout their record-breaking Bundesliga season, while PSG threatened at halftime. Harry Kane scored late in the dying minutes, but time was almost up and so was another European campaign for Bayern. "We weren't 'killers' in attack today. The key moment of this game was simply missing. We were there, but inside the PSG box, everything wasn't sharp enough. Now our main emotion is disappointment," Neuer told broadcaster DAZN after the match. PSG try to retain the Champions League, while Bayern still has a double chance after the league, Bayern could win their 13th home double if they beat Stuttgart in the German Cup final on May 23. But Kompany and Neuer know that even that might not be enough for this particular club. "We deserved to become German champions," the goalkeeper said: "We're looking forward to the cup final in Berlin. Of course, we're not thinking about that now because the disappointment is naturally overwhelming." PSG, on the other hand, look ahead to the weekend after reaching their second Champions League final in a row. If they win, they will be the first club to retain the trophy since Real Madrid won it three times in a row from 2016-2018. The Qatar-backed French side will play against English Premier League leaders Arsenal, who beat Atletico Madrid in the semifinals on Tuesday, in the final in Budapest on May 30. More to follow...
