MUNICH (AP) — Bayern's powerful CEO Uli Hoeneß is disappointed that France defender Dayot Upamecano has not yet decided to stay at the club.
The 27-year-old Upamecano's contract with Bayern runs out at the end of the season and talks over an extension are grumbling while rivals such as Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are likely to be interested in a free transfer.
"I would be happy if Dayot Upamecano decides to stay at FC Bayern," 74-year-old Hoeneß told Kicker magazine on Sunday. "I know that he and his family feel very comfortable in Munich. I fear that his advisors will do everything to take him away."
The 74-year-old Hoeneß, who is honorary president of Bayern after more than four decades with the club as player and manager, suggests that Bayern is trying to meet the financial demands of the player and agent, and that he is "shocked" by the agent's stance.
Bayern's management wants to meet the player in the coming days to discuss his future and force him to make a decision, Kicker reported.
Upamecano arrived from RB Leipzig in 2021 when Bayern paid his release clause of around 43 million euros ($47.5 million at the time). He had moved to Leipzig in 2017 from Salzburg, his hometown club.
He has played 178 games for Bayern. He has 35 appearances for France.
