A total of 102,000 British people have registered with the UK government as Iranian strikes continue in the region.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper told the BBC that it is estimated there are 300,000 British citizens in Gulf countries where most airspace is closed.

She said many of those stuck are holidaymakers, passengers transiting or people on business visits.

Foreign Office sources said evacuation was not imminent but the government was preparing potential scenarios if commercial flights remained grounded.

British citizens in Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Palestine, Qatar and the UAE have been urged to register their presence to receive updates from the Foreign Office.

On Monday, speaking to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, she urged all British citizens in the region to register their presence so the government could provide "the best possible support".

The government has previously used registration schemes to provide emergency updates to people affected by international crises, but in this case the number of people and countries affected is unprecedented.

Cooper told BBC Breakfast the situation was "deeply stressful" for those affected.

She urged people to follow local advice, which has been in place in most countries.

Asked if the government was planning to start evacuations, Cooper said: "We are in close contact, for example, with the travel industry, airlines companies and airports, as well as the governments of the region."

She added: "But we need to provide updates for people as we go... that's why we're encouraging people to register their presence so we know where they are so we can provide them with information quickly."

Sir Keir told MPs that "the situation on the ground could be difficult for some time" and the government was "looking at all options" to support British citizens in the region.

He added that the government was sending rapid deployment teams to the region to support British citizens, as well as working with the travel industry and the governments of the region.

Leila Hamoudi and Matthew McGuin, who are on their three-year-old son's honeymoon, are among those stuck in Dubai.

The family has not left their hotel since the strikes began.

It has been "terrible", Leila told BBC Breakfast. "The bombing has not stopped. We can hear the missiles."

She added: "No one knows what to do. We are in limbo, not knowing how to get home."

On Sunday, almost half of flights scheduled to depart from London Heathrow were cancelled, according to analytics firm Cirium.

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic cancelled or rescheduled some flights.

On Monday morning, Qatar Airways said all its flights had been suspended.

Emirates said it would operate some flights from Dubai on Monday evening, as Dubai airports confirmed they would allow a limited number of flights to operate at the city's two airports.

Abu Dhabi's Etihad International Airport also left a limited number of flights on Monday.

Iran has responded to US and Israeli strikes on US assets and countries with US military presence in the region, including Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, Kuwait and Iraq, with attacks.

Dubai, home to luxury hotels and the city's main airport, the world's busiest for passenger traffic, is one of the places that has been hit.

One person was killed and 11 injured at Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports after the strikes began.

Meanwhile, EasyJet has cancelled all flights to and from Cyprus on Monday.

Paphos airport, the island's second civil airport, was evacuated earlier after a drone was spotted in the airspace.

This came after Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides said an Iranian drone had crashed on a British RAF base on the island on Sunday.

There were no casualties and the base suffered "minimal damage", but the Ministry of Defence said family members would be moved to alternative accommodation as a precaution.
