In a major overhaul at Sale, Holly Eales has arrived. She took a big step this summer.

She's confident she won't take another.

"John Mitchell, England head coach, told me quite clearly that I can cover different positions, but I'm a 10," Eales told BBC Sport.

"And I won't be perceived as anything else."

A year ago, the question wouldn't have been asked.

At the WXV in Canada, Eales was the starting fly-half for the Red Roses, leading them to title-winning victories over New Zealand and Canada.

Her game management and running skills were a key part of England's threat diversification, ensuring they had sharper edges than Bandiva at the Rugby World Cup in England.

That didn't happen.

Zoe Harrison moved ahead as the first-choice 10, with Eales being moved to the centres or the bench.

An eight-footed injury before the Rugby World Cup meant Eales struggled to fight for her position, only appearing in the knockout stages and then being used as a field substitute in the semi-final and final against France and Canada respectively.

But the 28-year-old stands firm on her position and her philosophy.

"I want to dictate," she said.

"Of course, I got that ankle injury before the World Cup, but we were really moving in a more expansive direction.

"That's what I'm advocating for, that's what I'm bringing as a 10."

"I want to inspire the backline, I want to play this brand that attracts the audience.

In men's rugby, I think of players like Finn Russell - you buy tickets to watch him.

I want that kind of buzz around players in women's rugby, where we create this style of brand that people want to watch."

At Sale, she hopes she has found a scene to do so.

The team finished bottom in the PWR last season, but they have invested and improved.

Eales' England teammate Amy Cokein and Scotland winger Rhona Lloyd were also signed during the summer, with England's Morwenna Talling and USA's all-action runner Erica Jurell-Serra being exciting fives in the pack.

Sale co-owner Michelle Orange identified this season, after the Rugby World Cup, as a chance for some of England's players to return north and strengthen the struggling team.

Eales, born and raised in Merseyside, was a prime target.

"Holly was on my list, not just as a poster girl for the Red Roses, but for the North West and women's rugby in general," Orange tells BBC Sport.

"She's an ideal fit, we're very lucky to have Katy Daley-Mclean - one of England's best fly-halves - leading our women's program, and Holly is following in her footsteps."

I love Holly's style, her courage, how she puts herself on social media and identifies with her fans, that's exactly what we want in our team, to bring that extra X-factor and complement the girls we already have."

Showing teenage prospects in the North West that there is a path to the top that doesn't involve a long trip south was one of Eales' motivations.

Another is to shape the direction of Sale on the pitch.

"At the end of last season at Bristol, I really needed a change because I didn't fit the system," Eales said.

"I'm ready to play the brand I can now identify with."

"I'm really inspired by [head coach] Tom Hudson, who's running a bit of a collaborative program."

So far, it's yielding results.

Sale, who won only one match in the league last season, beat Bristol 46-17 at home in front of a sold-out crowd in the opening weekend of the PWR, before losing a bonus-point loss to Loughborough Lightning, a game they lost 36-17 last season.

They play Trailfinders Women on Saturday, and if the rest of the week's matches are played on Sunday, a win could see them top.

"We still have a long way to go to catch up with the established teams, but we're taking steps," Orange said.

"If we finish in the top six this season, I'll be more satisfied. I think aiming for the top four is ambitious this season, but I think we can really fight for the top four next season."
