Foreign Secretary calls for full reopening of Strait of Hormuz after ships in Persian Gulf warned by Iranian navy that those without permission to pass through the strait face attack. In her annual speech on the priorities of British foreign policy, Yvette Cooper also demands that Lebanon be included in the US-Israeli ceasefire agreement with Iran. Cooper will add that there can be no 'tolls on the international waterway' as ships face uncertainty over whether they may have to pay tolls to Iran to guarantee safe passage. Ser Kear Starmer is visiting allies in the Persian Gulf, meeting Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman last night, who agreed on the need for lasting peace. Later, Cooper is expected to say that the war has affected 'every country on every continent', driving up food and gasoline prices in the UK. She will demand toll-free and unblocked shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, after reports that ships may be forced to pay tolls for safe passage through Iran. Ministers acknowledge that the real decisions are in the hands of the US and Israel - and the Foreign Secretary is calling on them to include Lebanon in the ceasefire agreement. "There is much work to be done and we support negotiations," Cooper will say, emphasizing that there should be no return to conflict. She will emphasize that the Strait of Hormuz must be opened, as "a deliberate blockage of this critical artery of the global economy" affects the British people, even though it is 3,000 miles away. "It is an international shipping route, a transit route through high seas," Cooper will add. "No country can close these routes - it violates the fundamental principles of the law of the sea."
