Riyad Mahrez scored twice as Algeria began their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 3-0 victory over ten-man Sudan, in Rabat, in Group E.
The Desert Warriors took an early lead, with former Leicester and Manchester City midfielder Mahrez cleverly slotting past Mouned Abuezayd after being set up by Hicham Boudaoui.
Algeria goalkeeper Lounis Zidane, son of former Real Madrid and France superstar Zinedine Zidane, who was present at the Stade Moulay El Hassane, made a good save against Yasir Awad before being rescued by Abdel Raouf again after Abuezayd's shot.
However, their hopes were significantly dented six minutes before the break when midfielder Salah Adel was sent off for a second yellow card after a challenge against Reyane Aounour.
Mahrez beat Mouned again on 61 minutes, receiving an excellent pass from Mohamed Amrous and beating Mustapha Karshumi before slotting home. Substitute Ibrahim M'Sadi scored his first international goal, coming from Baghdad Bounedja's shot, five minutes later.
Later on the day, Edmond Tapsoba gave Burkina Faso a dramatic 2-1 victory over Equatorial Guinea, after they scored two goals in added time to earn the points.
The Stallions dominated the opening Group E fixture's first half against the Nandombe Stadium in Casablanca, with Sunderland's Bertrand Traore and Brentford's Dango Wareme causing problems on the flanks, but ultimately had nothing to show for it at the break.
Equatorial Guinea's woes worsened five minutes into the second half when midfielder Basilio Ndong was sent off for a reckless challenge against Bertrand Traore. Jesus Ovonno, Equatorial Guinea's goalkeeper, had to save Wareme after he was put through by Gustavo Sanogo.
Lasina Traore, a substitute, scored in the 71st minute, but it was disallowed for offside as Burkina Faso put pressure on, but Marvin Anibo scored their opponents' opener on 85 minutes after a corner, Carlos Akapo heading strongly.
However, there was a sting in the tail when substitute Georges Minoungu equalised in the fifth minute of added time after Wareme crossed into the box. Tapsoba then headed home the winning goal three minutes later after Ovonno had prevented Cyrille Iré's cross.
Côte d'Ivoire's champions, who squandered several chances, had Amadou Diallo's goal in the second half enough to see off Mozambique 1-0. In Marrakech, in the opening Group F match of the Africa Cup of Nations, the Ivorians struggled to break down their opponents in a competitive first half, but took control of the game strongly after the break, without making the most of their chances.
Diallo slotted the ball into the net on 49 minutes to secure a three-point win in the rain-soaked conditions, but the game's score would have been much more dramatic if the Ivorians were sharper in front of goal.
Wilfried Zaha, who was making his first international appearance in over two years since he surprisingly returned to the Africa Cup of Nations final stages, squandered several chances and Frank Kessie saved Burkina Faso's goalkeeper Herran twice.
Ivorian substitute Vakoun Bayo also had a chance for an easy header on target, but somehow missed it, and a Bayo effort in the 89th minute was cleared off the line by Herran as he rushed out of his goal.
Mozambique brought in winger Domingos, aged 42 years, one month and six days, as a substitute in the second half, making him the oldest player to ever feature in the tournament, besides former Egypt goalkeeper Essam El Hadari, who was 44 when he played in the 2017 final.
Mozambique still haven't won a match at the finals, a run that goes back to their debut in 1986. This is their sixth appearance, with a record of four draws and 12 losses.
Cameroon put their recent troubles aside to open their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 1-0 victory over neighbours Gabon on Wednesday, with Karl Tagoe Eyoungman's early goal securing the necessary win.
The Spain-born striker, Tagoe Eyoungman, poked the ball past Gabon goalkeeper Lois Mababa after being set up by Bryan Mbelemu. The goal was confirmed after a video assistant referee check.

Cameroon dismissed Marc Brice as coach three weeks ago and excluded goalkeeper André Onana from the team during the final month of World Cup qualifying. However, they will be content with the victory in a fast-paced match in which they had better chances.
Mbelemu was particularly effective, creating several chances for his teammates, with Junior Chamade scoring the best of them, but
